Jarae Rungthapani, a State Railway of Thailand engineer in charge of construction and special projects, said the collapse in front of the IT Square shopping centre occurred when iron girders supporting construction beams buckled, injuring at least seven workers, three of them seriously.

They were working for Italian-Thai Development Plc on the Red Line train running from Bang Sue to Rangsit in Pathum Thani. The construction firm won the bid to build the line for the SRT.

Mr Jarae said the SRT was investigating to determine whether the collapse was caused by carelessness by the contractor or simply an accident. Results will be available within days, he added.

Pol Col Termphao Siripubal, superintendent of Lak Si police station, interrogated an engineer, supervisors and workers as part of the legal investigation.

The Lak Si district office ordered construction halted until the investigation concludes.
