Flight surge for New Year

Next week's Lunar New Year will see a 20% surge in passengers through Suvarnabhumi airport, with most coming from China.

A total of 2.15 million air travellers are expected to pass through Thailand's gateway airport during the Feb 14-26 festive season. The New Year falls on Feb 19.

A daily average of 165,783 passengers are forecast to depart from or arrive at Suvarnabhumi during the period, with airlines adding flights to meet holiday demand, said general manager Prapon Pattanakijsakul.

The bulk of the 563 extra flights, both scheduled and charter, are direct flights from China. A single carrier, China Eastern Airlines, will operate an additional 144 flights from the mainland.

According to Mr Prapon, 12,034 aircraft movements (take-offs and landings) will occur at Suvarnabhumi during the holiday period, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.18%.

Of the total, 9,538 movements will be international flights and 2,496 domestic.

The projected volume is on a par with traffic during the Christmas-New Year holidays.
