BEIJING - Chinese airlines and airports ranked worst in the world for punctuality last year, according to data compiled by a United States-based monitoring firm.

Shanghai's two airports ranked at the bottom of the world's 61 largest, with barely more than 37% of flights leaving on time, the South China Morning Post reported, citing data firm FlightStats.

It said seven of the worst-performing airports were on mainland China, including Hangzhou Xiaoshan, Shenzhen Baoan, Guangzhou Baiyun, Chongqing and Beijing Capital International.

About 65% of all mainland flights left on time, the data showed.

By contrast, Japan's Haneda ranked at the top of the airport list, with an on-time average of 89.8%.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines ranked as the most punctual carrier, with 88.7% of flights on time.
