Airports of Thailand Plc has grounded plans to open shopping malls, hotels and sports facilities at its facilities in order to focus solely on aviation-related projects.

AOT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said non-aviation development projects violated regulations that reserve AOT airports for air activities only.

The decision halts the agency's Airport City programme to build malls, sports facilities and hotels at its airports nationwide. Former AOT president Makin Petplai launched the initiative last year, with planned investment of tens of billions of baht at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai airports.

Mr Nitinai said that the project at Don Mueang airport would reopen the first and the second warehouses of the airport to serve freight as before.

The third and the fourth warehouses will be used for aircraft maintenance and the fifth, the sixth and seventh warehouses may become a food centre, an aviation-exhibition centre, and an equipment facility.

AOT might grant concessions to private businesses to realise such development, Mr Nitinai said.
