1 killed, 28 hurt in NE bus wreck

One person was killed and 28 others injured when a Khon Kaen-bound tour bus overturned in Maha Sarakham’s Chiang Yuen district on Wednesday.

The air-conditioned bus travelling from Mukdahan hit a road divider, causing it to flip on Kalasin-Khon Kaen Highway 209 in tambon Phon Thong, said Pol Maj Saengphet Artsuphor, an investigator at Chiang Yuen police station. Police were alerted around 7am. 

The force of the impact threw one passenger out of the bus, killing her instantly. She was identified as Malai Phukhongsod, 57, of Kalasin's Yang Talat district. 

Twenty-eight others, including 12 men and 16 women, were injured. They were sent to a nearby hospital.

Driver Sompong Jetthaisong, 57, who sustained minor injuries, told police he lost control of the bus while negotiating a sharp turn, causing him to crash into the divider before the bus overturned.

He was held in police custody for legal action.
