The Land Transport Department has proposed new fees, including a higher surcharge for metered service from airports, for taxis operating in provinces outside Bangkok and its vicinity.

Under the proposal, the metered rate would double to 100 baht for the first two kilometres, and 50 baht from 20 baht at present for each additional kilometre afterwards. Passengers would pay 150 baht more for service from airports, up from 100 baht now.

Department deputy director-general Jirut Wisanjit said on Friday that the new fare scheme will be applied only for taxi service in areas outside greater Bangkok. It needs approval from Transport Minister Prajin Juntong, he added.

Fares in Bangkok remained unchanged, the official said.
