Emirates ups Bangkok A380 flights

Emirates is strengthening its A380 service between Bangkok and Dubai with the introduction of a fourth daily flight using the double-decker superjumbo jet from Dec 1.

The changeover will boost the carrier's daily seat capacity for the city pair from 2,693 at present to 2,948, the largest volume between the Persian Gulf and Thailand.

Emirates now operates two types of aeroplanes on its six daily Bangkok-Dubai flights, split evenly between A380s and B777-300ERs.

The number of A380 flights on the route will be ramped up to four on Dec 1, while the B777-300ER will be used for only two.

Barry Brown, divisional senior vice-president for commercial operations, said the aeroplane switch reflected the importance of Thailand as a market for the airline.

"The A380 has been extremely popular with travellers since we first started the double-decker aircraft service to Thailand in 2009," he said.

The change will make Emirates one of the largest of the few A380 operators flying to the Thai capital. Its decision to boost its A380 service for its Bangkok-Dubai sector follows a move by rival Qatar Airways to introduce a second daily A380 flight between Bangkok and Doha from Sept 16.

At present, three of Qatar's four Doha-Bangkok flights operate using Boeing 777-300ERs and the other by an A380 it deployed on the route last December.

Emirates is the world's largest operator of the spacious A380, with 64 in its fleet and 76 more on order. Its A380s serve 34 global destinations including 11 in the Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
