City police have approved a plan to close two traffic lanes — one inbound, one outbound — over eight sections of Phahon Yothin Road to make way for construction of the Green Line rail extension, starting on Monday.

The road closure begins at 10pm on the farthest right lane of the inbound and outbound routes and will last for a month, Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy chief Adul Narongsak said.

The decision came after a meeting with employees of Italian-Thai Development Plc and the UN-SH-CH Joint Venture contracted to construct the BTS northern Green Line extension from Mor Chit to Saphan Mai and Khu Kot in Pathum Thani.

The eight locations to be closed are:

1. Phahon Yothin Soi 35 to the Department of Agricultural Extension

2. in front of the 11th Infantry Regiment

3. Phahon Yothin Soi 57-61

4. Phahon Yothin Soi 67-69

5. in front of Ying Charoen Market

6. in front of the Royal Thai Air Force Academy – intersection at Occupational Health and Safety Office

7. intersection at Occupational Health and Safety Office – Bangkok gate Plaza

8. in front of Khu Kot police station – a Shell petrol station

When that work is ended, the contractors will close the farthest left lane on the inbound and outbound routes for three months to work on infrastructure systems, Maj Gen Adul said.

The 19-kilometre-long elevated rail route will have 16 stations and is expected to open for service by 2020. No date has been set for permanent road closure, but it is expected at the end of the year.

Traffic on the 1.5 kilometre-long Kasetsart flyover will be stopped at 10pm on Sept 11 as workers will be starting the demolition work the following day.

The flyover runs from Phahon Yothin Soi 35 to the Department of Agricultural Extension. The demolition will take two months and after that the contractors will start to install concrete pillars for the Green Line rail and a new flyover to replace the Kasetsart flyover, Maj Gen Adul added.
