The flyover at the Ratchayothin intersection on Ratchadaphisek Road will be demolished by April to make way for construction of the Green Line railway extension, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand announced Tuesday.

MRTA governor Peerayuth Singpattanakul said Italian-Thai Development Plc, which is responsible for civil engineering of the 12-kilometre route between Mor Chit and Saphan Mai in Don Muang district, would begin diverting traffic in the area in November.

The company will spend six months dismantling and moving infrastructure before knocking down the flyover by April next year. Mr Peerayuth said traffic lanes on Ratchadaphisek Road would be reduced from four to two when the first phrase of the demolition begins.

The MRTA and the contractor would seek advice from traffic police in adjusting road conditions and traffic flow in the area to try to alleviate the impact on motorists.

After the demolition, Mr Peerayuth said, workers will dig a tunnel at the Ratchayothin intersection and construct a new 300-metre-long flyover to replace the old one. The construction would take about three to four years.
