Emirates says it needs more space at Suvarnabhumi airport now and in the future so the airline can provide better service to its customers, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said.

United Arab Emirates ambassador to Thailand Saif Abdulla Mohamed Khalfan Al Shamisi and Emirates manager for Thailand and Indochina Jabr Al-Azeeby sent the request to the minister on Tuesday.

They complained that a limited number of check-in counters and luggage conveyor belts caused Emirates' passengers to wait long in their queues, Mr Arkhom said.

Emirates is seeking to add six more counters to its existing 14 and an area dedicated to it at a planned satellite passenger terminal. Airports of Thailand Plc would consider the request, the minister said.

"Areas at Suvarnabhumi and Don Meang airports are fully used. Whether the service areas can be expanded will be considered. Thai Airways International will join the discussion for mutual benefit," Mr Arkhom said. "As Emirates uses Thailand as its gateway to Asia, can THAI use the UAE's areas to connect to Europe? This will be considered in detail."

The minister said that Emirates was operating Airbus A380 aircraft to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport and increased the number of seats on each of the planes from 500 to 600.

The number of its daily flights will increase from three to four in October as Emirates is using Bangkok to connect to other countries in Asia and the Pacific, Mr Arkhom said.
