The Department of Land Transport will allow the registration of 565 new tuk-tuk three-wheel taxis in Bangkok early next year to boost the capital city's appeal to tourists.

Director-general Sanit Phromwong said the tuk-tuks were a popular mode of travel for tourists visiting the capital.

Issuing plates for another 565 would also mean drivers would be able to own their own vehicles instead of renting them, and thus increase their income.

People who have a tuk-tuk driving licence, are natives of Bangkok or adjacent provinces like Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon, and have not owned a tuk-tuk for 180 days or more could apply to register a vehicle at the department's headquarters on Phahon Yothin Road, Bangkok, this month.

The list of those who are approved would be announced in January 2016, and they would have until July 17 to register a tuk-tuk taxi with the department, Mr Sanit said.

More than 9,000 tuk-tuk taxis are registered in Bangkok, and more than 20,000 such auto rickshaw taxis nationwide.
