No one on blacklist passes through Krabi airport

Immigration police have confirmed that no one on the country's immigration blacklist entered through Krabi airport during the several hours that it suffered a power blackout on Wednesday.

Thousands of people passed through the southern provincial airport during a six-hour blackout which disabled data on the blacklist, Pol Lt Gen Natthorn Prosunthorn, the immigration commissioner, said on Thursday. After power was restored at 4pm, immigration police retroactively checked the profiles of visitors who entered during the blackout and found no blacklisted persons.

Most visitors at that time were Scandinavians, Chinese and Malaysian travellers, he said.

Chula Sukmanop, chief of the Airports Department and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, said about 3,000 visitors arrived on 10 flights, mostly chartered, during the blackout which hit at 10am.

Candles had to be used in the terminal to provide lighting as the airport's back-up power system broke down. It had been serviced only two months ago.

Atthaphorn Nueang-udom, the director of Krabi airport, said the airport had earlier switched to its backup power system as the Provincial Electricity Authority was carrying out maintenance on the electricity system and had suspended power supply.

The backup system overheated and shut down only a few hours after being turned on, he said.
