BMTA warns bus operator

The operator of public bus No.8 will lose its licence if it fails to improve its services in the next three months, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) says.

Surachai Lamwachirasakul, the newly appointed BMTA chief, said it was time to get tough on the bus No.8 operator following a fatal road accident last week in which a motorcycle pillion rider was killed and a slew of complaints about the service.

The bus route, operated by a contracted private operator between Kheha Rom Klao and Memorial Bridge, was the subject of 345 complaints from members of the public in the 2015 fiscal year.

The most common complaints were about reckless driving, refusing to stop at bus stops during heavy traffic, being impolite to passengers and refusing to take passengers to their destinations.

The BMTA will evaluate the bus firm's performance over the next three months, Mr Surachai said.

If the operator fails to improve the service, it will have its licence revoked, he added.

In the meantime, Mr Surachai said he had ordered the bus operator to submit the service records of the drivers and ticket collectors to the BMTA by today.

He also ordered the operator to educate its drivers and collectors about traffic regulations and teach them how to be more polite to passengers.
