One killed, one injured in rail crossing accident

SURIN — A young man was killed and another injured after the pick-up truck they were travelling in was hit by a train at a railway crossing in Muang district on Monday morning.

The accident occurred at about 9.30am at the railway crossing at Ban Khon Mian in tambon Nok Muang and involved the local train No. 428 from Ubon Ratchathani, heading for Nakhon Ratchasima, and the pick-up truck of a junk shop in Surin town.

Wirat Chadprasert, the train driver, said after the train departed from Surin station and gained speed, the pick-up truck suddenly appeared at the crossing. He blew the horn and tried unsuccessfully to stop it. The train hit the pick-up truck and dragged it for about 30 metres along the rail track.

The driver of the truck, Apichart Nonchansri, 17, was killed. Suksan Somkidsamer, 17, a worker of the junk shop, was thrown out of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

Accidents frequently happen at this crossing. The last one in April involving a truck loaded with chickens seriously injured one people.

The installation of an automatic railway crossing barricade was still underway when the accident occurred this morning.
