Australia to be home for new NBA elite training academy

NEW YORK - NBA and Basketball Australia officials announced Wednesday that the league will launch the NBA Global Academy elite training center at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The NBA is set to launch its Global Academy elite training at the Australian Institute of Sport, in which the first global prospects with enroll in the next few weeks

The academy, the NBA's global hub for top prospects from around the world, will be the league's fourth after recent launches in Hangzhou, Jinan and Urumqi, China.

The first global prospects will begin enrolling at NBA Global Academy in the next few weeks.

"NBA Global Academy will allow top prospects from around the world to train with and compete against their peers in a structured environment under the supervision of NBA-trained coaches and in collaboration with Basketball Australia's internationally recognized coaches," NBA vice president for international basketball operations Brooks Meek said.

"On behalf of the NBA, we look forward to working with Basketball Australia on this initiative and helping elite prospects reach their full potential."

The facilities, to be housed at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence, include educational development for male and female players and support existing programs with NBA-level coaching, competition and a global framework for prospects to measure their development.

"Basketball Australia is thrilled to partner with the NBA on the development of promising young talent from around the world," Basketball Australia chief executive officer Anthony Moore said. "Our Centre of Excellence has a wonderful track record of producing athletes who can compete on the world stage, and we welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with the NBA."

NBA-trained coaches will guide under-16 and under-18 elite teams that compete against top-level rivals and top talent at each center can be chosen for travel teams that play in exhibition games and international tournaments.
