Verdict expected in key asbestos trial in Italy

An Italian court was set to deliver its verdict on Monday in a trial over 3,000 alleged asbestos-related deaths in a case that is being closely watched as a potential precedent around the world.

The verdict in the biggest-ever trial against an asbestos maker in a lawsuit brought by thousands of Italians is expected on February 13, 2012 with two former executives at the company facing sentences of 20 years in prison.
Swiss billionaire Stephan Schmidheiny, the former owner of a company making Eternit fibre cement, and Belgian baron Jean-Louis Marie Ghislain de Cartier de Marchienne, a major shareholder, face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
