Spanish police, protesters clash amid European strikes

Spanish police fired rubber bullets at die-hard protesters hurling bottles, rocks and firecrackers, capping anti-austerity strikes across southern Europe that boiled over into sporadic clashes.

Riot police clash with protesters at the end of a demonstration organized by Spain's "indignant" protesters, a popular movement against a political system that they say deprives ordinary Spaniards of a voice in the crisis, near the parliament building in Madrid during a general strike.

Earlier in the day hundreds of thousands of angry demonstrators swamped Madrid in a mass outcry against a string of austerity measures aimed at bringing the national deficit under control.
