Police formally charged five men Thursday with the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old student, a crime which appalled India and led to national soul-searching about the treatment of women.

Police filed a string of charges including murder, rape and kidnapping against the suspects, listing evidence in a confidential 1,000-page document submitted to a district court in the south of the capital New Delhi.

The five aged between 35 and 19, who would face the death penalty if convicted, had been expected in court but were not present when the media were allowed in to listen to part of the proceedings.

Yes, by all means follow the law in judging this case.
And hopefully the full weight of the law will be brought to bear against the accused, if judged guilty.
And if death by hanging is the sentence, I don't think there will be even one tear shed in India for the accused, not even by their families.
If one reads the details of this case...it is beyound heinous how this young girl was brutalized, tossed out of the van like a piece of rubbish and then almost driven over by her attackers.

Honestly death by hanging is too lenient IMO.
Life imprisonment in a tiny solitary cell, with minimal food, water and no sun, would be much more appropr

I hope they get the death penalty and its shown publicly so the next time a rapist gets any ideas this is the first thing he thinks of .
