Alarm mounts over deadly Algerian hostage operation

- +

Foreign governments voiced alarm over the fate of their citizens seized by Islamists at a gas plant in the Algerian desert, where a dramatic rescue operation left several hostages dead.

An undated grab from a video obtained by ANI Mauritanian news agency reportedly shows Islamist leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar, who claims responsibility for the attack on In Amenas. Algerian special forces on Thursday launched a rescue operation on a desert gas complex, killing fleeing Islamists and an unknown number of their hostages, the communication minister said.

As relatives endured a tense wait for news from the raid on the plant, officials said Algerian special forces had taken control of a residential compound at the complex, where hundreds of hostages were being held.
