Smartphone sales surged in 2012

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts - Global smartphone sales soared in 2012, taking a huge slice of a mobile phone market that was otherwise flat, survey data showed Friday.

A report by the research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) showed a 44 per cent jump in smartphone sales for the year, with 712 million units sold. That accounted for 45.5 percent of all mobile phone shipments.
