French-led troops were closing in on Mali's fabled desert city of Timbuktu Monday after capturing a string of other towns in their offensive against Islamists in the north of the country.

A reconnaissance team had reached the edge of Timbuktu, and French and Malian soldiers were approaching the city "without meeting any resistance", a senior Malian officer said Sunday.
