India parliament attack plotter hanged, protests erupt

A Kashmiri separatist convicted of involvement in a deadly 2001 attack on the Indian parliament was executed on Saturday in New Delhi -- triggering protests on both sides of the border in disputed Kashmir.
Indian police escort Mohammed Afzal Guru to the courthouse in New Delhi, on December 16, 2002. Guru -- sentenced to death for taking part in the plot to attack India's parliament in 2001 -- was executed after his final mercy plea was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee.
Hundreds of demonstrators rallied near the family home of Mohammed Afzal Guru in northern Indian Kashmir hours after authorities said he had been hanged.
