Buddhists enraged by toilet in France

A French hotel that decorated rooms in a fake "Little Buddha" theme went a step too far when it used toilet covers with an image of the Buddha's head, Thai Buddhists said Wednesday.

A report on the Moulin de Broaille, a hotel in Bourgogne, outraged a group of Thai residents of Europe when it said that Buddhist symbols were placed throughout the rooms, including on toilet covers.

The Thais complained through the Knowing Buddha website at www.knowingbuddha.org.

D17 peterd OK a little slower...you know the French and they allowed free press cartoons mocking the Prophet and then: "Security was reinforced at French missions and other institutions in countries feared most at risk of a hostile reaction to the French cartoons." I doubt a hotelier wants to hire extra security and risk his Profit by a bombing of his hotel over a picture on a toilet seat.

It's ignorance, and well stated that in Europe Buddhism is considered as either a religion or a philosophy of life. I concur with the request, does make sense. My suggestion is to ask Thai authorities to spend the same energy to remove Nazi symbols sold on t-shirts, rings, and so on, such as stickers... because Jews died during holocaust. In 2013 Thai people are also severely hurting people: Jews (religion), whatever the nationality (because religion is not linked with a nationality). In conclusion, Mr. Nopparat Benjawattananon, please, have courage, and contact asap the Ministries... no Nazi cross in Thailand, no more.

Simple. Print some toilet paper here if French flags and distribute to restrooms.

Some of the comments I read here are disgusting. I think both Buddhists and Catholics we are too tolerant and peaceful, we tend to accept offences against our religious faiths with a light heart. Go do the same about Islam and see what is the reaction of the Muslim community. Truth is there is no respect anymore. These Thais who felt insulted by the so called "decorations" in the hotel in France they have all my sympathy. Every religion must be respected.

Sure! We can see it as an innocent mistake and not get blame them. But please , it has to go . Sacred religious symbol of a religion don't belong on a toilet seat .

It was not the purpose of the hotelkeepers to hurt buddha philosophy. They want to attract guests to take this room, by giving a zen-feeling, which can only be positive for their meditation and karma.
So, lets forgive their innocence and see it that way.

It should be basic common sense that sacred religious symbol of a religion is not to be used as toilet seat. The Lord Buddha was a god in another life but did not identify with it as his true identity once Awakened! Buddhism can be apply to philosophy as well , but that does not mean that you can treat its sacred religious symbol with disrespect .

I agree that earrings are more appropriate than toilet cover... but to wear amulet is animist way, not bouddhist way. Christian cross is symbol of suffering, of Jesus offer his life... Buddha image as toilet cover and christian cross as earrings, both of them are moquery and disrespectful !!!
