Pope Francis of Argentina selected

VATICAN CITY - Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope Wednesday, becoming the first pontiff from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Francis, associating himself with the humble 13th-century Italian preacher who lived a life of poverty.

Looking stunned, Francis shyly waved to the crowd of more than 100,000 people who packed a rain-soaked St. Peter's Square for the announcement, marveling that the cardinals needed to look to "the end of the Earth" to find a bishop of Rome.

In choosing a 76-year-old pope, the cardinals clearly decided that they didn't need a vigorous, young pope who would reign for decades but rather a seasoned, popular and humble pastor who would draw followers to the faith and help rebuild a church stained by scandal.

D 7: I do not question your opinions, so why you and other non-believers must question the Pope, the Church, the Holy Bible? If you do not care, just do not comment on it. Besides, what you call scientific evidence of evolution is not proved either, it is just a theory. Your error is to search for a God outside yourself whilst you keep ignoring the voice of God that speaks inside yourself. Open up your heart, not just your eyes.

Or Italian? @Hugo D5, don't take this the wrong way, but anybody who believes in an Almighty, who needed six days to put the world together, is out of his mind. Every day, evidence piles up proving the contrary, which is called evolution, based on scientific EVIDENCE. You people don't have a shred of evidence of the existence of God.

@jck, your wise words don't go down very well with some people here at BP. Philippino's perhaps, or Irish?

D 4: perhaps you can found your own church and see how many followers you get... The Pope´ s first duty is to be a spiritual leader, not a lawmaker. To us Catholics he is the successor of Saint Peter and therefore of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In that respect, a Pope has to promote life, and abortion is against life, and so is contraception. A Pope is never against this or that, he simply is pro-life. Limiting the number of children and births is a bit like putting Communism in action: theoretically you may think it is a good idea, but when u look closer then u realize it is just terribly against humanity.

Yet another old fogy who does not support contraception or a woman's right to choose abortion. The last thing this world needs is more people. If you must have a pope choose a young person familiar with the world’s real problems and give him a max term of 4 years to see if he does any good.

An Argentinian Pope might worry the Falkland Islanders.

I'm not too big on this church or any other, but if ever there was a great role model for the pious, it was St. Francis of Assisi if history can be believed; and if there is truth to Roberto Rossellini's beautiful black and white classic film "The Flowers of St. Francis."

He's 76 years old. So he's in there for the long run..
