- +

The six contenders for Iran's next president issued a joint appeal for calm on Friday before the close of polls in the first election since outgoing President Mahmoud's Ahmadinejad's 2009 re-election sparked mass protests.

Iranian women queue up to vote in the first round of the presidential elections at a polling station in Tajrish square in northern Tehran, on June 14, 2013.

Electoral officials said the count got under way shortly after polls closed in the provinces at 10 pm (1730 GMT), , the ISNA news agency reported.
