Anelka gets five-match ban for 'quenelle'

- +

Nicolas Anelka's future in English football was in the balance Thursday after he was given a five-match ban for making the controversial 'quenelle' salute which was widely condemned as anti-Semitic.

A file picture taken on December 28, 2013, shows West Bromwich Albion's French striker Nicolas Anelka gesturing as he celebrates scoring a goal at The Boleyn Ground, Upton Park in east London

The Football Association cleared Anelka of being an anti-Semite and were convinced that he was not promoting anti-Semitism by his use of the gesture.
