Suicide attack kills 16 in northern Afghanistan

- +

A suicide bomber killed at least 16 people at a crowded market in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials said, despite a tightening of security for presidential elections less than three weeks away.

The Taliban have vowed to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections in Afghanistan and called for attacks on officials, politicians and campaigners

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Maimanah city, the capital of remote Faryab province which borders Turkmenistan and has a mixed population of Uzbek, Turkmen and Pashtun ethnic groups.
