- +

A strong earthquake rocked Guatemala and southern Mexico on Monday, causing cracks in buildings, triggering landslides and trapping at least one person under a fallen wall, authorities said.

The magnitude 7.1 quake rattled San Marcos near Guatemala's border with Mexico, trapping one person under a wall. Cracks opened up in buildings in the town, and there were also landslides in the area, authorities said.

The quake was centred 35 km west-southwest of Tapachula in the Mexican state of Chiapas at a depth of about 75 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
