WASHINGTON - The White House said it was "delighted" over the release by Sudan of a Christian woman sentenced to death for renouncing Islam, and welcomes her arrival "soon" in the United States.

A handout photo released by the Osservatore Romano and taken on July 24, 2014 shows Pope Francis greeting Sudanese Christian Meriam Yahya Ibrahim Ishag and her daughter Maya during a private audience at the Vatican

"The United States is delighted that Meriam Yahya Ibrahim Ishaq is now safe and free and will soon be traveling to the United States," read a statement released by the President Barack Obama's national security adviser Susan Rice.
