Nobel prize finalist made redundant

SYDNEY – A leading chemist tipped to win a Nobel Prize has been made redundant in cutbacks to scientific research by the Australian government, a media report said Tuesday.

San Thang: Lost out on Nobel prize, then lost job.

San Thang, 60, a world-leading researcher in organic chemistry at the government's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, was named in the media as a contender for the 2015 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

But the Canberra Times reported Thang is now working for no pay as an honorary fellow at the CSIRO after he was made redundant with 700 others as part of the government's AUD$115 million dollars in cuts to the organization's budget.

Thang arrived from Vietnam aged 24 as a refugee and is one of three lauded CSIRO chemists who developed new plastics and polymers used by industry.
