At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 18,027.45, up 68.01 points (0.38 percent).
The S&P 500 also notched a fresh record, gaining 3.68 points (0.18 percent) to 2,082.22, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 16.00 (0.33 percent) to 4,765.42.
