Yanukovych, 64, is wanted for misappropriation of funds and embezzlement in Ukraine, which he fled in February after a pro-Western revolution toppled his regime.

The former president has been living in Russia since his ouster. He and members of his family are accused of accumulating vast fortunes during his time in office.

One of Yanukovych's sons, Oleksandr, managed to build a fortune from coal estimated at $500 million (420 million euros) despite being a dentist by profession.

Ukraine was ranked 144th out of 177 countries on Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index.
