Taxi driver, 92, crashes into house, dies

NEW YORK – A 92-year-old taxi driver lost control of his vehicle on Thursday, driving through several lawns, striking multiple mailboxes and ultimately crashing into the living room of a home on Long Island, the police said.

The driver, Joseph Saccente of West Sayville was killed in the crash, in neighbouring Oakdale. He did not have any passengers at the time.

Detective Sgt Bryan McMenemy of the Suffolk County Police Department said it appeared that Saccente had some kind of medical emergency before the crash, with one witness telling the police that he was seen clutching his chest as he lost control of the vehicle.

Saccente had been driving a taxi for several years, the police said. A relative reached by phone at Saccente's home said the family was grieving and could not speak.

He was employed by Colonial Transportation, based in Sayville. A representative from the company declined to comment when asked about the crash or Saccente's history driving a taxi.

Sgt McMenemy said Saccente had a Class E driver's license, which qualified him to drive a taxi.

Asked why Saccente was driving a cab at age 92, McMenemy said, "I guess he just liked to work."
