G7 warns could toughen sanctions against Russia

ELMAU CASTLE (GERMANY) - G7 leaders on Monday warned Russia that they stood ready to toughen sanctions over Moscow's role in the Ukraine conflict, as escalating violence sparked fears that a ceasefire deal could be unravelling.

The first day of the G7 summit opened on June 7, 2015 in Germany was dominated by the Ukraine conflict, as US President Barak Obama and the summit host, Chancellor Angela Merkel, urged the global community to stand firm against Moscow

The leaders said they would roll back the punishing sanctions if the peace deal was implemented but "also stand ready to take further restrictive measures in order to increase cost on Russia should its actions so require", the leaders said in a summit-closing statement in Germany.
