EDITORIAL Suthep weaves a tangled web
21 Dec 2013 : While Suthep Thaugsuban's rhetoric from the stage remains indignant and as the protest continues in the streets, rest assured that behind the scenes everyone is looking for a way out. But the way out must also save face.
21 Dec 2013 : Re: "Our system is a democracy of lesser evils" (Opinion, Dec 20).
26 Nov 2013 : Over the past few years, many of the interviews I see in magazines and newspapers mention the importance of preparing for the Asean Economic Community. A shabby kindergarten school near my house put up a sign proclaiming it has hired foreign teachers to prepare for the upcoming community. An entire shelf in bookstores displays everything with AEC in its name. Factories, fashion brands and even food chains are getting ready for 2015, when the bloc will go into effect. Most of them don't even know what the changes will entail.
26 Nov 2013 : Anti-government demonstrators' seizure of parts of the Finance and Foreign ministries goes beyond being a "peaceful" protest.
25 Nov 2013 : At the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), it has recently been a case of "nothing new". In November of last year, the UNODC issued a press release it headlined, "Record-high methamphetamine seizures in Southeast Asia in 2012". Two weeks ago, the same office issued a press release with this headline: "Record-high methamphetamine seizures in Southeast Asia". New year, same story. What is going on?
25 Nov 2013 : The Constitution Court has done its duty well for Thais in holding an act of the parliament subject to the constitution. In this decision the court has ruled that a majority in parliament may not exercise a willful and unaccountable power over Thai politics.
25 Nov 2013 : Without trying to create a controversy, or a war of words over democracies and definitions, it is generally accepted that in a democracy, the leadership governs with the consent of the electorate, which can easily remove that same leadership for ineptness by election and petition.
25 Nov 2013 : Allow me to borrow some of US President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign slogans on the theme of change. "Vote for Change", "Change We Can Believe In", "Our Time for Change", "It's about Time. It's about Change", "Stand for Change", or "Organise for Change".
25 Nov 2013 : Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation. It is violence against families, communities, nations and humanity.
25 Nov 2013 : Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra missed a great chance in her decision to skip a visit to Singapore tomorrow. She would no doubt have learnt some things from Singapore Premier Lee Hsien Loong, while at the same time passing on some knowledge.
25 Nov 2013 : I'm in one of those deep, dark places at the moment.
24 Nov 2013 : The announcement that nuclear experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit Japan in the coming week to help with planning in a critical stage of the decontamination operation at the devastated Fukushima nuclear plant is encouraging. The IAEA has had some involvement in the decontamination in the past and helped to draw up an action plan after a team visited Fukushima in April, but it has long been obvious that Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), the privately owned company that runs Fukushima, should be seeking out more international assistance to bring this complicated and potentially very dangerous process to a successful completion.
