Defying evolution inevitably

Adapt or die. Thailand is no Islands of the Galapagos, but it seems to have recently shown all kinds of symptoms of failure to adjust that the islands are famous for. If Charles Darwin were alive and found his way to these shores, he might have "adapted" himself and ditch the finch, the iguana or the giant tortoise in favour of the more primitive specimens our country has to offer.

He could take the much more vivid case of Thai Airways International. When a large ground-feeding finch arrived on the Galapagos, the medium-sized ground one evolved to grow a smaller beak so that it could compete better for food - find a new niche so to speak.

So how about THAI?

The national carrier has soared into the news recently because of its financial trouble. The airline is suffering losses, to the tune of 10 billion baht in 2008. It also has trouble finding loans to solve its "liquidity" problem. Basically, it does not have enough cash to run its operations and its credibility is not good enough for creditors to extend loans without charging exorbitant interest rates.

Thanong Bidaya, former chairman of the board of Thai Airways International, said the other day if the 48-year-old airline continues to fail to adjust itself to the modern world, it will soon fly into extinction.

What has THAI done, or not done?

Without going into operational details, Mr Thanong targetted THAI's "ineffective corporate management" as the culprit for the airline's woeful performance. Without going into details, anybody would more or less agree with his comment. The airline was established at a time when competition was not as fierce, or as diverse, as it is now. It also enjoyed near-monopoly status for many years. It only had to please certain people. Its clients were not really key to its survival.

A medium finch chirping happily before the arrival of a larger one, and by extension, smaller, no-frill finches to compete for the same limited food sources?

I have only dealt with THAI on occasion, and I am thankful for that. Most of the times I had to get in touch with the airline's staff, I felt like I had to beg for their services. Many times I heard a frosty THAI voice telling me to go to another airline if I didn't like it.

From these experiences, it seems to me THAI is stuck in the past, when it reigned supreme in its field of operation and had no need to care. If an organisation pivots around that egocentric belief, there is no need to get into details about its work culture or methods. It's only now when it has too little to eat because larger and smaller birds are around and feeding as well that it realises it is stuck with an excessively cumbersome beak!

THAI is not alone in the evolution tribulation.

Look around and we will see other entities struggling for a firm grip as changes rush in.

How about the army? Its handling of the Rohingya boat people suggests it is also operating outside of the world view and under values shaped by a time that is far in the past. Security versus humane treatment of immigrants? The army stays trapped in the old mode of defending every square inch of its territory against foreign invaders.

They can't quite grasp the fact that the world has moved on and that the two issues must go hand in hand (or be seen as being so).

Or take the police and their attempt to solve the continuing, at times fatal, brawling among vocational students. Do they think people will believe the brawls will end because members of the two rival groups are brought together to shake hands and give each other red roses for a photo op in front of the police?

Again, the nature of crime has evolved. The expectation of people towards the police's responsibility, and accountability, has changed. The officers themselves have to learn about the new environment they are operating in and find a niche for their continued existence. Otherwise, they too will find it difficult to do their job and find appreciation.

It's true that politicians have been compared to dinosaurs many times. After watching the debates in the parliament for a few days, I can't help but realise these people are really suffering from the readjustment syndrome. They were nitpicking. They called one another names. They protested, then called a quorum.

Few actually scrutinised the Asean framework agreements and what they entail for us in the country.

A large part of the country's political crisis is caused by these out-of-date politicking politicians.

They too will realise it's too late when they find their beaks are way over-sized.

Barry! I didn't say that Thai is the best airline in the world.but compare to China Airline, Malaysia or Qantas I can tell you that thai is one of the best. Everyone knows that the Airline lost more 10 billion bath last year because of the Management........ , but nothing to do with their services. You mention "Have a look at http://www.worldairlineawards.com Thai never get a mention".For your information You better check year 2007 and 2006.

Thai Airway will get some award this year. Don't you worry! GO THAI !!!:D

Just checked on-line what the price would be to fly from Bangkok to Amsterdam in May 09 back in 3 weeks. The price would be 130,000 Baht plus 14,000 in taxes and surcharges... That is nit for a business ticket but for Economy. Compare that to EVA they charge 96,000 Baht for the same route but Super Business Class!!

Excellent summary of Thailand by David. I have lived in Thailand with my thai wife and daughters for the past 26 months.Prior to then, my wife lived in Australia for 11 years. We have always travelled with Thai air, but not anymore. There has not been a direct flight from Phuket to Perth for some years and 3 of my last 4 flights were delayed by minimum of 2 hours. Also connecting flight from Phuket to Bangkok was cancelled and had to wait for the next flight. This year will fly from Phuket via Singapore to Perth and return as almost same time and much cheaper.

An, it's exactly that xenophobic attitude that will see the extinction of Thai airways. If they were as good as you think, then why do thy lose so much money every year. Have a look at http://www.worldairlineawards.com/ , Thai never get a mention.

    An excellent post.
This is not about Thai airways, though it is used as an example. Its about politics..OLD politics and the strangle hold that the old guard has on Thailand one which if Thailand does not change, will kill it..metaphorically speeking..it will make Thailand un competitive and the people that will ultimately suffer will be the ordinary Thai folk.

Good POST...much better than that oher ed fron Veera or Verma whatever his name is.

    Thank you for this article

    Where should I start?

First of all, what you say about Thai-air and their incompetency is all true. I used to fly with them but not any more. Now I fly with Eva Air or Singapore Airline. The flight attendants are arrogant and rude with Thai air and the service is cold turkey, really.
I think that the status and situation with Thai air is closely related to the view foreigners have of Thailand right now. Amazingly rude, arrogant and corrupted. This is very sad.

The Army is arrogant and almost offended to have to even talk about it´s actions of evil so it lies. The corruption and the lack of freedom of speech is where the root of those problem lies. Treating those Burmese refugee´s like this is pure evil in action.

The Thai police is the same. It´s feared because they have all the power and you have none, and it´s corrupted from the inside out.

Thailand is not at all friendly to investors or people who decide to spend some time there and enjoy the country. There is always the Visa hassle and the problem with ownership.

In other countries you are not regarded as guest or a tourist after some time, especially if you settle down and have a family or business.
In Thailand you are always only a guest and are treated as such no matter what your real status is. It´s offending and degrading and truly a racial abuse if you look at it real closely.

My conclusion is that the Thai elite (army, government and Kingdom) don´t really want anything to do with foreigners except having the dropping in and for a short stay and spend as much money as possible. They are not seriously interested in having the invest or living there. This attitude is the problem, the virus, because it spreads down to all the services provided to non-Thai people.

I still like and love the average Thai person because they are what matters and they are the true and real asset of Thailand.

I have been visiting the Land of Smiles since 1980 and used Thai Airways all the time until a few years ago. They have been overtaken by the carriers in the Gulf using newer, cleaner, better appointed aircraft. The entertainment systems are outdated and offer poor choice. The meals and service have become ordinary instead of expeptional.
Thailand needs to resolve many things, not least the stability of the Government. The petty rivaly between Red and Yellow factions strikes outside observers as extremely petty, even juvenile, but it is very damaging to the reputation of the country.
LOS and Thai could recover if they make the hard choices NOW!
    Next year is too late.

My point is what's the different?

USA attempted to put "democracy" in practice over 200 years ago, with that period of American experience, in 2000, W. Bush became a president by Supreme Court, amazing grace? In Comparing Thailand, former "Sayarm" as referred to "Siam", the country called Bangkok by foreigners as capital. Anyone know where Bangkok is? Nowhere Bangkok existed! We have BangkokYai and BangkokNoi, sorry no Bangkok. How contradictory we had been given name to living in.

"Land of the free", Thailand with current structure that repeatedly shortened freedom of any kind since the beginning of the new name given by series of military regimes and assisted by other governments. The worst part is the "defined freedom" as the law has been drawn as a line on the sand, they were drawn by hand and erase by foot of the same elite group.

As "defined freedom" I didn't see a different, USA or Thailand, in outcome of politics or leadership in management, e.g., Thai Air Line, Privy?, or military, and so on. People in charge tend to believe that without them the institution or the world would be gone. The fact that self-serving ignorance greed is resulting society economic failing as happen everywhere now.

What we need today and into future is new idea of revolution beyond the practice of variety kinds of "democracy". An idea and practice that individual freedom well-defined for common purpose of constituting common human value. That is to eliminate the concept of X-man, supper human, and "God" totally. Just focus on human, period.!

    Sam.
