POST BAG No bins for butts

As a footnote to the cigarette-butt saga highlighted by Spectrum in its latest issue, it should be mentioned that there is an uneven playing field.

I rarely smoke on the street in public; however, after a particularly stressful meeting one afternoon, I found myself in need of a quick puff. Then I walked along Sukhumvit Road for 5 whole minutes looking for a waste bin to deposit the spent butt. No luck. So I discreetly threw it into a drain-hole.

I was immediately descended upon by a Thesakij inspector who demanded I pay a 2,000-baht fine. The fact that the evidence was on its way through Bangkok's sewer system made no difference.
