The international politics of the Bout affair

At first it seemed like a rare good day of late for Thai-US relations, perhaps even a positive outcome for the increasingly scrutinised Thai justice system.

No information shared: Viktor Bout, left, and PM’s aide Sirichoke Sopha.

The Thai Court of Appeal had adjudicated that Viktor Bout - the reputed arms merchant whose exploits have been popularised by Hollywood - had fallen foul of the Thai-US extradition treaty.

Could it be the USA disagrees about military coups, political courts, and murdering 90 protesters, etc?

The Thai govenment is so disfunctional that is why it got itself in this mess. This guys is guilty and everyone knows it,but now Thailand has screwed this whole thing up so bad he probably will walk.

I'll go along with that statement, "The United States should take its US Marshalls and plane home."

In my opinion, chasing after Mr. Bout is a waste of time and a big-waste of American taxpayer's money.

It'll be interesting to see if the Thai Government kow-tows to US political pressure, or sends Mr. Bout back to Russia.

It's my guess, PM Abhisit's government will eventually side with Russia, and send Mr. Bout home.

Nice piece but Thailand is een by outsiders now as playing a game to try to save face. Not let the justice run its course. The Foreign Ministry has been upset with the USA since the US Embassy met with members of the opposition party during the demonstrations. To say politics is not involved is very lame. Politics plays a role and everyone knows it. And Thailand is also upset of the military games the USA recently had with Cambodia. People need to look at the whole picture, not just the justice system.
