POST BAG Stop student violence

The shooting of a young school boy is a very sad story. Student rivalry and violence, however, is not a new problem, even though the intensity of violence has increased in recent years _ not only in Thailand.

I do hope that parents, teachers and education institutes as well as the Ministry of Education will start thinking further.

Parents getting together _ as has happened _ to support the purchase of weapons for students who fear attacks, is not a solution. The 16-year-old boy who killed Jatuporn was allegedly one of those who had that fear.

    Hi Brian, Disc 19

Hard to tell if monks are fake. I used to see a bunch of them walking around Nana, Silom, etc giving the hard sell to tourists..even going into restaurants and annoying tourists for tips.

Fake monks, fake women, fake students, fake beggars, fake taxies. fake friendly people on the corner...
Thailand does a good job of impressing tourists.

It is true that Thailand is over-generalized.

Distinguished professor, the problem is not with you but with un-distinguished, unruly tourists running amok in Wat Pra Keaw. You are better off visiting more humble temples, not such grand, distinguished ones which you maybe feel befitting a distinguished person such as yourself. You can practice Buddhism wherever you are and make merit with any Monk. Be at peace with events around you, they do not concern you unless you allow them to. Do not be so easily discouraged from your belief and convictions.

It may be small consolation, but I have witnessed Buddhist monks from Sir Lanka and Tibet not only refused admission to temples, but accused of being fake monks because their robes and accoutrements different from Thai monks.

Thais aren't merely xenophobic and arrogant, they're ignorant of Buddhism and it's variations.

    To Prof. Hames

You are obviously an educated and well travelled man but what puzzles me is how little you have learned about Thai society in your 5 years here.

As a foreigner, you are at best 3rd class in Thailand. 2nd spot is reserved for domestic animals.

This is assuming you are caucasian but if you happen to be of any dark complexion ethnicity, you have to take your best case scenario a further 2 notches down.

Discussion 14. Why must Thai go so far to Europe or Germany and the UK. Thai could probably end up with many skin head hooligan teenagers. Thai could just take 2 – 5 flight to Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan where the teenagers and students are a lot more discipline than European. Culturally are much closer too.

The Military are the real power in Thailand and all the politicians and Thai Elites families know it.

But dont worry, Thais are having a Government survey in which they can canfirm everyone here is nice....."Amazing" Thailand....oh yeah!

    Disc.#4 and #14,

Both of you really have bees in your bonnet about American violence. Astrid did not state America is best in being lack of violence but look at America they have so much violence in youngsters that a lot of study was made. One may learn from their recent concerns. Her actual words: "Especially in the United States, quite a lot of literature and experience in this field can be found already". She did a great service by pointing out to the Thais that their way is not the right way of doing it, but because of plenty of experiences in the States on violence, they must have done a lot of study for one to get benefits from.
I do not know who Astrid is but like to be fair.

ASTRID BARTHOLOME! What a strange suggestion! Why would any sane country/government turn to the US for help with dealing with youth & gun crime? The US has one of the worst reputations in the world for youth shootings and crime rates. How many times do we hear of young Americans turning guns on themselves or their classmates. I'm afraid the American example is not one to follow or be proud of. Maybe Thai's should look to the way these issues are dealt with in Sweden, Norway, Germany and the UK.

You have to be a general to get your snout into the next life as a politician.
