POST SCRIPT
Last week's Spectrum investigation into the thesakij, or "cigarette police", prompted an Australian colleague to recall his own experience a few years ago which had a somewhat unorthodox conclusion.
He had just hopped off the skytrain at Nana and lit up a cigarette as he headed towards a bank. At the foot of the station steps he noticed a uniformed gentleman taking a little more interest in him than is normal. After walking a short distance it became clear this fellow was following him, presumably waiting to pounce the moment he threw away the cigarette butt. He wasn't going to fall for that and looked around for a litter bin. Of course, there wasn't one.
As he reached the bank the official was still on his trail and there was still no sign of a bin. So he stubbed the cigarette out in a large potted plant outside the bank and headed inside.
