It's just a bit of 'tea money' after all

Last week's Spectrum investigation into the thesakij, or "cigarette police", prompted an Australian colleague to recall his own experience a few years ago which had a somewhat unorthodox conclusion.

He had just hopped off the skytrain at Nana and lit up a cigarette as he headed towards a bank. At the foot of the station steps he noticed a uniformed gentleman taking a little more interest in him than is normal. After walking a short distance it became clear this fellow was following him, presumably waiting to pounce the moment he threw away the cigarette butt. He wasn't going to fall for that and looked around for a litter bin. Of course, there wasn't one.

As he reached the bank the official was still on his trail and there was still no sign of a bin. So he stubbed the cigarette out in a large potted plant outside the bank and headed inside.

Peter, what are you prattleing on about? A gum wrapper can easily stowed in a pocket, not all gum chewers spit it out, but all smokers when on the street toss their smouldering butt on the floor. The fact is smokers seem to think it is a right to litter and then complain if they are caught and fined. Guess what? As a non-smoker I have never been stopped and fined at any of the smokers hot-spots and I always get a laugh at those detained at MBK because they felt they could not manage to go shopping without a smoke first. Pathetic habit.

Baster ! What has your rant got to do with the problem, trust me! These people will go for you just has quickly if you unwrap your tasty strip of mint flavoured plastic. You are the one who makes my life hell having to step on your discarded gum, which also leaves the street alot more unsightly with black blobs all over the place.

A freshly dropped cigarette butt is a vile scrap of trash. Think about it.

Often still smoldering they present a fire risk. They are non-biodegradable scraps coated with hundreds of toxic chemicals and all soaked in saliva that may contain scores of viruses. That is disgusting.

Smokers harp on about their right to smoke. I presume that means a right to pollute, annoy and stink. We are conned into accepting their 'right' because we in the west are obsessed with rights.

I have rights too. Rights not to have to step on them and the right not to be blasted in the face with smoke as I walk.
