Unnecessary show of force

Security authorities from the government on down have taken many wrong steps in their effort to make Bangkok safer. Seeing armed soldiers on seemingly every street corner and public place is not at all reassuring for Bangkokians or visitors. The troops convey almost every wrong image, while failing to address the problem of the continuing bomb and grenade attacks.

Creating an armed camp in the capital will heighten fear without affecting the odious group behind the serial bomb attacks.

One must credit Deputy PM Suthep Thaugsuban and his military-controlled Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) with one thing: when they said last week they would keep 464 Bangkok locations under 24-hour military surveillance, they were entirely truthful. By Saturday, Bangkok was figuratively a sea of green. Groups of soldiers in combat gear, rifles unshouldered and ready, were seemingly everywhere. Head for the skytrain station, walk warily past heavily armed troops. Go to the mall, edge by the soldiers.

Well said Northman of discussion #4. We can say that PM Abhisit is the PM for Bangkok and not whole of Thailand.

#4 you mean how the corporations in the US use the military to fill their coffers at the expense of people's lives and tax money? Democracy!!!

I live in Bangkok and do not see all the Military that is mentioned in the article.

In addition, the safety of all people in Bangkok is important and it if take military to protect people that it is a part of reality. In the US there was military ofter 9/11 all over the places. Should there be some military presence at some important places it is not unreasonable.

Again I live in Bangkok and do not see what is proclaimed in the article. It sounds to me just a way of making waves for nothing other than steering up things that should be left alone! Let people in Thailand and especially in Bangkok get to a normal life and figure out their differences without creating problems that are not there.

Lets put all this in prospective as the editorial was trying to do.

There is a WAR going on in the south of Thailand. Every day, another man, women or child is MURDERED! Where are the troops (or should that be the Generals?)........Bangkok.

    Why?

Well here is where the money, power and shopping are.

The Military are now so hand in glove with the Politicians and in control, that they have now stepped over the line from being servants and protectors of the people to deciding what, where and whom they will support.

The true test of a democracy is the control and use of the Military by the civil authority.

On this the current PM has and is failing the Thai people 100%.

I couldn't agree more with #1, there's nothing you can do to stop some nutter lobbing a grenade when he is intent on doing so, CRES should go home.

The cartoon I think, is on the wrong page! a bit like Kabul being in S. Africa!

Yet again and article that contains a cartoon that is not even remotely connected to the topic! Why? What am I missing? Is this intentional? Sure does detract from the articles content. Is this just the Thai way?

From past, and current, actions in Iraq, Afganistan, the deep South, and numerous other countries that experience almost daily bombings, and shooting, that have in place heightened levels of security, in some cases the best security in the World, they still aren't able to stop the singular attack against an unidentified target.

There is no way that Bangkok, or any other province on Thailand, is safe from an attack by an individual by having emergency decrees in place. They are safe from group actions, but not from singular attacks like those that have been taking place lately.

It is the same the world over. There is no law ,regulation, curfew, or ordinance, that can protect the general population from the attack of a singular individual at an unidentified target.

The regulations, and emergency decrees, can give the general population a false sense of security, but that's all it is when dealing with lone attackers at unidentified targets.
