Boot camp in far South inappropriate for hooligan students

The idea to send hooligan students to a boot camp in the three southernmost provinces seems emotionally motivated and outlandish. It is also an insult to the locals down there.

This very controversial idea to deal with hoodlum vocational college students emerged at a meeting Monday of educators chaired by Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat .

He suggested the setting up of a boot camp in the strife-torn far South to accommodate the hooligans, who would have to spend some time doing civic work and learning the realities of life down there as part of the rehabilitation programme to turn them into law-abiding citizens.

The Office of Basic Education has been told to draw up a list of appropriate civic activities.

The Ministry of Education has also drawn up a set of measures to deal with the student violence problem, which was to be submitted to the cabinet today for consideration.  Among the proposals: installation of more surveillance cameras at 10,000 spots in Bangkok regarded as high-risk areas for student violence; creation of peer group and parent group networks at each school to help students with a record of violence; and punitive measures for schools with repeated incidents of student violence.

Of all the proposed measures, the boot camp idea stood out and generated a lot of mixed opinions.

Voicing his opinion at Matichon Online, a reader from the deep South asked bitterly why Bangkok's “social garbage” should be sent to the region, which is already plagued with more than enough violence.

send them to death row, where murderers belong
no bail, a quick trial and no discount for confessing.

This problem is not going away. The incessant drumming of school spirit and class ego is a cancer that eats away a Thai society, all in the name of enforcing conformity by not bringing shame upon your class or school. After all, when was the last time you heard or read about a senior police or military promotion without mention of the lucky devil's pre-cadet class number and the names of a few classmates.

10000 new security cameras in Bangkok? Grab a mop, because the puddle of drool from the corrupt politicians and their business cronies is starting to spread.

As far as a civic service project for these misguided youths, forget the South. Why not send them off on a de-mining project along the disputed borders with Cambodia? Their utterly senseless deaths could then become fodder for another wave of nationalism, and give the family of their innocent victim a sense of retribution and justice done.

This is really unfair for those punks and it was bad idea, bully is treated by bully why not send them for concentrated navy seals or army training program for 2 or 3 months? or any harsh military rehab this will kick the hell out of them and at the same would not risk their life.

Give the Minister a chance. It may solve the problem.

I don't have any problem with sending the troublesome students to a boot camp (to learn some discipline and respect). But I don't think it should be in the far south. Why not set up a military-style training school (for juvenile delinquents who are violent, truant, drug abusers etc.) right in or near Bangkok?

Like all problems none of the thai politicians can solve them, its always sweep under the cupboard or hand it over to the next guy that walks in. Dealing with school hooligans or juvenile crimes, thailand should learn from its neighbours. There are success stories everywhere you just need to ask.

Bizzarre idea! If this is a serious suggestion, it does not speak well for the educational leadership of this country. Perhaps, it's a good indicator that leaders with more educated opinions and solutions need to replace this type of retrograde policy makers that keep the education system in the Dark Ages.

The "win, win" solution is to send the PAD and its writer, who claim they love the country more than anyone, to the far south. This idea is much a bit better, isn't it? At least it can save the time for the PAD writer to write nonsense here and instead to do something really benefit the country. But I believe none of the PAD will really dare to sacrifice for Thailand since they are hypocrites and speculators.

Send these little punks to the south and they will all cry and want their mommy maybe that will teach them a lesson that they are not as tough as they think.
