Generals give their retiring chief a standing ovation

A standing ovation from commanders under his direct supervision was an unprecedented farewell gesture for army Commander-in-Chief General Anupong Paojinda. It was, however, one that obviously pleased the retiring general immensely.

With 21 days remaining in office, Gen Anupong has been busy with a farewell tour of military units both in Bangkok and other provinces. The most impressive treat, so far, came on Tuesday at the meeting of all forces' commanders under the army commander's direct supervision _ the last such for Gen Anupong.

At the meeting, Gen Anupong made what was probably closest to an act of opening his heart to his officers than any he has done in the past. He thanked his lieutenants for following his command over the past three years even though it meant they had to be involved in tackling the political crisis.
