Veera stuck between the proverbial

In our lives we surely must have come across one of those unfortunates _ the short-sighted girl who loses her spectacles on a camping trip; the nice boy who makes one simple mistake and his life spirals downhill to that miserable place of what-could-have-been; the person who seems to stumble just a little but falls all the way into the deep, dark abyss...

I often think of Veera Somkhwamkid as one such unfortunate soul.

For some inexplicable reason, Mr Veera finds himself in a corner so painfully tight that no choice seems available to him that will not entail his ending up in utmost misery.

Discussion 5 BINGO! Outside of this tiny Thai pond, the frog is not so big! Perhaps this is a direct result of Thai governments not dealing with the People Against Democracy as they should have. Do you think Kuhn Veera may have gotten used to being invincible because of the ineptitude of the Thai authorities?

@#9: Hear, hear! The editor might also want to consider the plight of ethnic Khmer citizens on the Thai side of the border.

What a foul insidious article. Lives were lost because of this feckless irresponsible cretin. How about having a touch more respect for the actual people who have died in this absurd jumped up little spat. There was never a problem before. The entire fiasco was never even touched upon 15 or 20 years ago. It was created by morons such as him to fan the flames of their political posturing and it is not helped by fatuous poorly written journalism such as this. "The soft tinkling of sound of buffalo bells... the short sighted girl who loses her spectacles..." Utter bilge. And this from the deputy editor.

Veera should not stop fighting. Not now.

This is a fabulous article. And I agree with the posted comments for the most part. D 6 seems decisively off the mark, though. If Veera knew he was doing something wrong, he wouldn't have exuded the confidence and inner calm the author of this artcile describes. The gambit backfired enormously, of course. It put into play the present crisis of relations with Cambodia - which prior had been relatively stable.

Veera is just a puppet of those elites in Bangkok. He was brainwashed and sent to do something he himself knew was wrong. He is just a tool used by the powerfuls to get their power. He was over committed. The ways he acted in the court (arrogant, ignorant....) gave the judges no sympathy for him. 8 Years should be enough for him to learn to do something else for good cause.

In Thailand, people of importance have this aura of invincibility and being untouchable and that the law does not apply to them. Little do they understand that outside of Thailand, their ill-gained power means absolutely nothing and they are truely no one of any significant importance like they believe they are.

"The footage, which showed a clear sky and a golden-brown, just-harvested field with the soft tinkling sound of buffalo bells in the background"

A few days later however, the atmosphere was dramatically replaced with the sound of bombs, the stench of death and the buffalos all gone! All thanks to this arrogant old man.
Does Veera think about the families of the dead soldiers? I very much doubt it! Som nam na Veera.
