Driving fast & furious into days of thunder

Despite the fact that in 2010 across Bangkok 210 people died in road accidents that resulted from motorists driving at excessive speeds, it is only after two high profile traffic accidents that the Metropolitan Police Bureau has decided to initiate a campaign against speeding drivers.

These victims of drunk driving embark on a wheelchair journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, in a campaign to keep roads safe during Songkran. The event took place on Mar 15, 2006.

On Dec 27 last year, eight people died when an underage driver collided with a passenger van on the Don Muang tollway. Then, more recently on March 25, a man driving a Porsche at 120kph cut in two a 17-year-old girl. Because these two accidents are more important than all the others, they have prompted the police to step up their PR machine... sorry, efforts in combatting reckless driving on Bangkok's streets.

Khun Arglit, you are of course spot-on. But what the country desperately needs is a Police Force. It doesn't haver one at the moment. Without a functional Police Force and Judiciary, nothing at all will work. Citizens, politicians, businesses, will all continue to flout the law - because they can.
