A group of about 100 writers, including two SeaWrite awardees, Prabda Yoon and Binla Sankalakhiri (or Wutthichart Soomsanit), have signed an open letter distributed last Friday, calling for an amendment to Article 112 of the Criminal Code which deals with the lese majeste law, and an end to the abuse of this law to block free expression and political opinions.
Binla Sankalakhiri, left, and Prabda Yoon have put their names to a letter seeking changes to Thailand’s lese majeste law.
It was a daring and interesting move by these so-called intellectuals. A pity that their action was not reported in most mainstream media, which are too occupied with the forthcoming election, or simply because they find the issue too sensitive and irrelevant to the current situation. So, thanks are due to online media such as Matichon, Manager and Prachatai, which gave proper coverage of this action by the writers.
