Once a politician, always a politician

Fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is a typical politician, one who cannot resist the temptation of politics even though he has said he wants to quit the game. There will always be an excuse to justify a political comeback.

The headline in today’s edition of the Bangkok Post newspaper reads: “I don’t want to lead again, says Thaksin”. In the story, the fugitive politician in a rare interview given to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Lateline programme from his luxury home in Dubai, said there was no need for him to return to Thailand as a prime minister because his sister, Ms Yingluck, “is already there” (poised to become the next prime minister).

Thaksin went on declare that he wants only to teach and to play golf if he ever returns to his homeland.

“I just want to be a lecturer, that’s my dream. Playing golf. Giving guidance for my children – for their business endeavours. That’s what I really want to do.”

Readers' reactions to Thaksin’s interview, specifically the remark that he has no political ambition to regain the premiership, included straight disbelief, too good to be true, and yet another lie, to advising the Post to give people a break and just ignore the man in future.

The Bangkok Post story, a wire service story, missed out an important part of Thaksin’s interview regarding his political ambitions.  In the full text of the interview with ABC’s Lateline, the interviewer Zoe Daniel continued to press the ex-prime minister about his stated intention, that he does not want lead the government again.

“So never, never would you come back and be prime minister again?” she asked Thaksin.

Thaksin already stole from Thailand, does he really think the people need him? yea the people who likes him doesn't pay a satang of tax to the country so they have no clue the seriousness of the crimes he committed! All they know is that thaksin gives them loans and easy money. With corruption aside, all those tax money are suppose to be used to improve the lives of these low income thaksin supporters! How ironic.

Thaksin has help African leaders set up lottery systems in African nations and is reaping in more money from even more poor people.

This opinion piece is a good commentary on the interview but a major error has occurred. Zoe Daniel happens to be a woman - click on the link to the interview and this is obvious. It surprises me a senior journalist could make such an error. Remember, in reporting news or giving opinions on it, accuracy is key to credibility!

There is no culture of accountability in Thai society, so its no surprise to hear Thaksin speak as he does. Hundreds of people have died because of this man and yet he continues to glorify himself as something the country needs. What he fails to tell us is that its his MONEY the people want. Thailand's democracy is but a facade to Thaksin's massive 'patronage system'. Money, power and influence down through the thousands of cliques in Thailand is what matters. Thaksin is no better than a god father as he talks about Thailand in such a way as to assume the country can't do without him. He has no SHAME.

I believe him! If he comes back as prime minister, he will be playing golf and helping his children make a fortune.

'...actions speak louder than words.' Thaksin could lead by example and serve his prison time.

Why would anyone is the world trust one single word that comes from that man's moutha after all the bad things he has done, besides he is not suppose to be in a postion to be anywhere but in jail.

All he really probably wants are his money back. I don't think he really gives a stuff about much else aside from money.

If Abhisit apologizes to Red Shirt, Red Shirt will be reconciled, too.
