Tablets in Prathom 1: is it the right time?

In response to the election promise of the Pheu Thai Party to provide all first graders with a tablet computer to enhance learning and improve Thai students' digital literacy skills, questions have been raised as to how this should be incorporated into Thai education.

Before these Grade 1 pupils can use computer tablets, they need first to develop rudimentary skills in Thai language and mathematics.

Recent publications have raised issues such as the quality of the tablet PCs, the schools' digital infrastructure to facilitate the use of tablet PCs in classrooms, and the need for teachers to be educated in this new form of learning and teaching.

I don't agree. Give any grade one kid your android phone and in an hour he or she will figure it out. My kid, grade one, works out how to win at Angry Birds that using logic and something that's sorrily lacking in the Thai school system. He's also developed good dual language skills as well. I personally think the problem will be by grade 3-4 there won't be any teachers capable of teaching them how to use them as the kids will have outdistanced the teachers by such a wide margin.
