Wooing Japan with TPP deal as 'economic saviour'

Time is running out for Japan to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) negotiations. The pact is the only Asia-Pacific-wide free-trade agreement that is currently under negotiation involving nine members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec): Singapore, New Zealand, Chile, Brunei, the United States, Australia, Peru, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Not everybody agrees: This Japanese demonstrator at last Saturday’s Occupy Tokyo rally, holds an umbrella signifying opposition to the Trans- Pacific Partnership (TPP) free-trade talks.

In Thailand, business leaders and academics have urged the government to seriously consider joining the talks on this issue.
