Concern duly noted

Re: "Dangerous child stunt shocks a passerby" (Postbag, Jan 23). On behalf of Central Pattana Public Company Limited (CPN), I would like to thank the writer for his concern about the child's safety at the show which took place at our shopping mall.

I believe the team which organised the event did not have any intention of putting the child's life in danger; they were just expressing Chinese beliefs and culture during the lunar new year celebrations.

However, we have acknowledged the writer's thoughtful concern and would like to ensure him and your readers that we will give more attention to such safety issues in the future.

200,000 Thais in LA is about as many foreigners as there are legally staying in Thailand, but it's a lot less than the number of other nationalities living there.

I've also read some horror stories about British Visa Staff being blatantly prejudice in interviewing Thai wives years ago and in the end the UK govt were forced to initiatiate a worldwide investigation into consulate conduct which was published to the shock of the public, pretty damning it was, but no ation was ordered.

Maybe American embassy staff should apply to get a visa to the US as a training exercise and get a taste of what its like .Even the part where they are refused and their thousands of baht for the application fee is kept .

"just expressing Chinese beliefs and culture" well in South Pattaya in front of a Chinese supermarket a young boy fell of the top of an 8 mtr pole doing a dragon dance two days ago. The result is not know but the amount of blood left on the parking lot was nauseating. Some cultural "things" should be re evaluated as with the head hunters "cultural thing" in Borneo.

Over the years of living here I have often felt that the young staff who come to Thailand to work at the western embassies need much more cultural and social orientation than they receive. They should be told to use their common sense and feel empathy when interviewing people, and not just follow a cold, black-and-white tick-box approach. Some seem to consider themselves to be like the Gate Keepers and last line of defense of their country as opposed to ambassadors. I dread the day when I have to help my wife to apply for a tourist visa for the UK again. She and 3 of my Thai relations were refused tourist visas by the embassy in spite of having all the required documents, but they passed the second time after a long and detailed complaint about their interviews, which were more like police interrogations carried out with prejudice.

There is a very good reason the American Embassy has a condescending attitude toward all Thais applying for a visa.
Actually, there are about 200,000 reasons.....Go to Los Angeles and ask them.............
